To mark the building’s 18th birthday, The New Art Gallery Walsall is inviting applications from artists
who wish to develop new work in response to the theme: ‘The Building as Material’. This residency
provides scope for the selected artist to respond to the raw materials and interior of the building:
concrete, leather, Douglas fir, walnut, and stainless steel. Artists may also wish to consider the
physical presence of the gallery architecture within the town, the notion of ‘coming of age’, or the
founding concept of the building as a ‘big house’ to be explored and discovered.

The residency will run from 11 June – 26 August 2018. The successful applicant will be required to
work on a focused project on the theme of the building. They will work from the Gallery’s 1st floor
purpose-built Artists’ Studio and will be expected to engage fully with the gallery context.
