In the 1980s, settling in Herefordshire, Nolan embarked on several series of spray paintings, delighting in the new brands of paint made for artists, as well as supplementing his ‘palette’ with commercial and domestic spray cans. This exhibition includes works from 3 series: portraits of significant individuals (including his great friend Benjamin Britten); images of mythical indigenous Australian subjects; and powerful works that respond to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (1987-1991).
